The music of Viennese composer/trumpeter/flugelhornist Franz Koglmann sounds like no other. He manages to marry his love for the West Coast cool jazz with elements from European modern and classic music composers, especially Franz Schubert, Alban Berg and Anton von Webern. His thematic compositions, recorded almost solely for the Swiss, Basel-based HatHut and for the German, Frankfurt-based Between the Lines labels, are complex. Quite often ironic and melancholic, always playful, detached from sentimentality but still very emotional, and usually demanding.
The ideal Koglmann listener has to be open-minded and well-versed with modern poetry, visual arts, films, philosophy, architecture and popular culture, and one that is fascinated with the multiple intertextualities in these forms of arts. A Koglmann listener would reject the strict genre definitions that legions of Wynton Marsalis' neo-conservative disciples are trying to lock jazz into them, and indeed, Koglmann is a blunt critic of the Marsalis phenomenon. - Eyal Hareuveni, All About Jazz
This is one of the more unique and enjoyable CDs in my jazz collection. The music is based on an imaginary play about an illicit affair (apparently not so imaginary) between Marilyn Monroe and French actor Yves Montand. Even if you're a bit prudish, you can still enjoy this wonderful music. It's almost classical in nature, but unmistakably jazz; a fascinating, yet highly-accessible aural feast.
Overall, the drum-less score is light and delicate (with violin, clarinet, oboe, French horn, piano), while trombone and tuba add some luscious body. Koglmann's writing for the various combinations of instruments here is ingenious. Each of the 12 tracks ("scenes") is a jewel unto itself. And Koglmann (who plays trumpet and flugelhorn) assembled an absolutely stellar group for the recording. Sound quality is superb.
It's hard to find comparisons to this music, but if you enjoy the collaborations between Miles Davis and Gil Evans (particularly MILES AHEAD), you'll probably like this. Unlike the Monroe-Montand affair, this CD should provide lasting pleasure. Very highly recommended. - David Conklin, Amazon
